Scion FR-S Koyorad Aluminum Radiator Install

We combat rising temps in our project Scion's engine by installing an upgraded heat exchanger

Aug 28, 2017

I know it's been a long time since I've done anything to my FR-S. The truth is, after installing a Tarox big brake kit and Signal Auto-style livery, I had no idea what to do next. Then it hit me on a trip to visit family in Bakersfield, Calif. There, summer days can easily hit 100 degrees and my supercharged FA20 must be taking a beat down from the heat. I did the logical thing and hit up my good friends at Koyorad. That turned out to be a good call, since my coolant needed some refreshing anyway.

The Koyorad radiator features a 36mm "Hyper" core to maximize heat transfer within its slim profile. The high-density radiator core increases surface area and coolant volume while offering increased space in the engine bay, which is perfect for anyone who is trying to go with a forced induction setup. Like all Koyorad radiators, the design makes for a direct fit replacement over the stock plastic/aluminum radiator. We headed to our main guy Young Tea at Auto Tuned to help us with the install.

First you'll need to raise the car and drain the coolant. Remove your intake shroud and disconnect the fans. Remove top radiator hoses. In my case we needed to remove the supercharger in order to install the Koyorad radiator. Drain the remaining coolant by disconnecting the lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing.

Next you'll need to remove the coolant reservoir and the radiator t-support. Remove the four 10mm bolts that separate the condenser from the radiator located behind the crash bar. Remove the radiator brackets that are held by two 10mm bolts on each side. This will probably test your patience since they are not easy to reach. Take your time.

Koyorad designs and manufactures each radiator to be a direct-fit performance replacement over the stock radiator and bolts directly to the factory fan shroud. Reinstall everything in reverse order.

After replacing the coolant, make sure there are no air bubbles by watching the flow after opening the bleeder valve. Also, a special Auto Tuned Tip: Make sure the radiator drain plug is fully tightened before reinstalling the front bumper. Lastly you'll want to burp the coolant and wait for the fans to turn on before driving.

The plan was to install a Koyorad oil cooler while we were at it, but there was not enough room with the intercooler up front. We'll be getting back to it once my FR-S gets a facelift, which is scheduled to happen before SEMA.
