For many enthusiasts, a cold-air intake or exhaust system is among the first upgrades made to a ride. Regardless if it’s 1996 or 2016, we can all probably remember the first time we installed one. The grumble under full throttle on naturally aspirated cars, or the “whooshing” sound on turbo vehicles - it gave us the sound and (some of) the power we wanted.
Case in point for our 2013 Lexus IS F; the dual overhead cam 5.0-liter 2UR-GSE V8 already sounds beautiful but we wanted to accentuate that sound and power up our 8-pot beast. To fill the void we ed K&N for their 69-8703TS Typhoon Intake System.
The K&N 69-8703TS Typhoon air intake system is a free-flowing, mandrel-bent aluminum tube air induction system. The factory air filter and air intake housing are replaced by the K&N Typhoon air intake, which comes with a titanium topped K&N high-flow air filter and a heat shield that installs into the previous air box space.
We took our IS-F to Coastal Chassis Dyno in Tampa, Florida for our before dyno test, install, and after dyno test. We even performed the install with the car still strapped on the dyno, which was straightforward and took us a little over an hour to complete.
On a Mustang Dyno the IS-F put down a respectable 357 horsepower and 343 lb.-ft. of torque to the rear wheels.
The first disassembly items include the engine cover and the front plastic cover.
Pop the clips off that hold the fresh air scoop to the core support, strut tower cover clips, crankcase vent hoses, and the air intake assembly.
Most of the install time is removing the decorative plastic covers that make the engine bay look clean.
Transfer the mass airflow sensor (MAF) into the K&N air intake. The sensor only goes in one way so it’s impossible to install backwards (famous last words – Ed.)
The factory intake system uses a vacuum actuated solenoid that opens a secondary door for the intake system. This will no longer be used and will be reinstalled with a vacuum plug.
With the heat shield prepped with the weather stripping and filter adaptor, it bolts in place with existing mounting points.
The silicone couplers adapt the intake tube from the throttle body to air filter. The existing crankcase vents fit back in place without any modifications.
The solenoid we talked about earlier bolted in place and the vacuum cap installed.
All done! The K&N Typhoon Intake System fits perfectly into our IS-F’s engine bay with ease and only a few hand tools.
Gains were impressive just for an intake install - 375 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, a gain of 18 horsepower and 7 lb.-ft. of torque. If you look at the torque curve at about 5,900 rpm, the IS-F is producing 20 lb.-ft. more than stock.
