120 Hours – Week To Wicked 2001 S2000 Day 5

Unveiling the completed Week To Wicked AP1

May 26, 2018
Covercraft Car Cover

After four days of turning wrenches, drilling holes, and on occasion cutting off a few stubborn bolts, the 120 Hours Week To Wicked AP1 is complete! The final day consisted of a few finishing (and weight saving) touches, some new rolling stock, and a visit to GReddy for some final touches before getting the car on the street.

Before any of that, however, we received a custom car cover designed just for our AP1 from the folks at Covercraft. If you've never felt one of their covers before, it's tough to do them justice in pictures, but the form fitted cover is ultra-soft to the touch on the inside and stretches perfectly over the arches of the AP1. Pockets designed specifically for the car's side mirrors and even its rear passenger-side mounted antenna are provided for an incredible fit. To top it off, Covercraft also added the pbskids 120 Hours Week To Wicked logo to the windshield area for a truly one-off design. If you care about your car's finish as much as we do, this is the cover you should be after – they're just that good.

With the Covercraft cover fitted, a few new items were revealed that help finish off the build. Contrasting the factory red paint are Seibon's dry carbon fiber hood and trunk lid. The matte finish is no mistake, as the dry carbon design does away with the wet process you typically find on carbon fiber pieces, and there are no fiberglass components involved, either. Instead, a pure, high-quality carbon piece is produced and is far lighter than anything we've come across previously.

The OEM S2000 hood, made of aluminum, is already very light, but the Seibon hood is far lighter and is a direct replacement requiring no modification, retains the factory windshield washer fluid sprayers, and works with the original hood stay.

The same dry process was used for the trunk lid, but it requires a little extra work if you intend to keep the third brake light. In order to properly mount the light, we made a quick template, marked and measured a few times after finding the very center of the trunk and got down to business with steady hands and a few different drill bits. The original trunk striker bolts right to the Seibon piece as it includes threaded holes that use the factory hardware. It's a little stressful drilling into a brand new carbon fiber piece as nice as this one, but the end result was well worth the effort.

Even with a short time to put this car together, it couldn't be called "complete" without some new wheels and tires. Giving the car a little more contrast, Konig Wheels provided a set of their new for 2018 Ampliform design in 17x9 and 17x8 inches to maintain the S2000s staggered fitment. With a number of new designs, the Ampliform was by far the favorite among the pbskids staff. With its mesh-inspired design and Dark metallic graphite finish, it was the perfect fit for our build. Relying on Konig's Flow Formed technology, the wheels remain lightweight and strong enough for the abuse we have planned for the finished product on both street and track. Sizes range from 17 to 20 inches in various 4 and 5-lug patterns, and if you're looking for another color option they've got you covered with a classic bronze option as well.

We've worked with Falken on a variety of projects over the years and when we're looking for the right tire, we need only give them the facts and they always make the right call. In this case, with our Week To Wicked build, Falken recommended their summer ultra high performance FK510 from the Azenis line. Offering outstanding grip and overall performance, the FK510 features Falken's 4D Nano Design that's allowed their engineers to optimize their high-performance models at the molecular level, which has a positive effect on wear characteristics as well as wet weather traction. The Azenis FK510 can be found in 17- to 22-inch options in various widths to cover all types of vehicles.

With last of the parts added, we hit the street to make sure there were no issues and then loaded the car onto a trailer to travel to GReddy's Irvine, Calif., facility for a final once over and to hit the dyno. Double-checking all of the hardware, oil and fuel lines, and a quick read of the spark plugs revealed that all was good and it was time to spin the rollers. Being that the GReddy S2000 turbo kit is ready to roll right out of the box, no tuning was needed, but close attention was paid to the AEM Electronics X-band wideband sensor to make sure there were no hiccups.

After a few pulls, our project car registered 260 wheel horsepower – about a 70whp increase over the stock output and passing spent gases through our car's original catalytic converter. More important than the peak number is the drivability. While we love the F20C's ability overall, in stock form the area under the curve is painful at times. With the quick spooling Garrett GTX2866R Gen II turbo, GReddy's revamped kit gives the AP1 a much broader power curve and one that seems to be available anytime you stab at the accelerator.

S2000 handling will forever be praised and for good reason. It's just so good, even in stock form. However, AST has something that can take that handling to a completely different playing field.

Their 5200 coilovers are light years ahead of anything we've ever tried under the arches of previous S2000 encounters, and the solid, confidence-inspiring feel you get when taking a turn at speed is rather addictive. Add to that a set of lightweight wheels, like our Konig Ampliforms, and some very capable, grip-happy tires like Falken's FK510, and you've got the perfect combination for fun on the street, back roads, or track.

That's it for pbskids's 120 Hours Week To Wicked build-up. The full-length video with a complete wrap up and in-depth look at the parts used will air soon.

For this build, the official sponsors of the pbskids Week To Wicked project includes: Falken Tires, Konig Wheels, GReddy Performance Products, SPEC Clutch, Seibon Carbon, ENEOS Oil, Covercraft, Energy Suspension, and AST Suspension.
