In celebration of , Toyota held a special event for new Mirai owners marking the arrival of the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. A special "Back to the Future" Toyota Mirai shows off gullwing doors, a Mr. Fusion home energy reactor, and interior details that will remind you of the time machine seen in the movie.

With an audience of Mirai owners, dealers, and guests, Toyota debuted the , showcasing the potential of the fuel cell vehicle and its fuel to be sourced by almost anything, even trash. While you won't be able to drop banana peels in the Mirai like you could in the fictional DeLorean, organic waste that has decomposed can produce biogas that can be converted into hydrogen fuel.

"A piece of the future is now a reality with the Toyota Mirai," said actor Christopher Lloyd in a release. "Compared to some other technologies predicted in the film, like rehydrated pizza or self-tying shoes, this technology has the real potential to change the world."

Today marks the official on-sale date for the hydrogen car, so it was a big event. During the festivities, many new owners received ceremonial keys to their future cars. More than 2,000 people have requested to buy the car, which is available only in California at roll-out.
