The Drift League Launches

Introducing the Formula D-sanctioned, Irwindale Speedway-based Pro-Am series for the L.A. area suburbanite

Apr 11, 2018

A lot of people don’t quite get the allure of Irwindale Speedway, but part of the appeal has to do with location; within minutes of three major interstates, and hemmed in by the suburbs of Baldwin Park, El Monte, and Duarte, the short, banked oval and 1/8-mile drag strip are literally right in many Los Angeles county residents’ backyards. In a reality where most motorsports facilities are an hour or more away, and often in some pretty remote places, for many Angelinos the so-called “House of Drift” is not that far (full disclosure: it’s 25 minutes from our front doorstep to the Irwindale parking lot).

The convenience factor alone should help The Drift League – a new Formula D-sanctioned Pro-Am competitive series hosted by MotoIQ – get up to speed pretty quickly (not to mention the heavy concentration of sliders in this area). As per the pro-am credo, TDL’s objective is to help aspiring drifters prepare for the professional levels of the sport. Organizers aim to emphasize proper vehicle preparation, mechanical and safety inspections, and how to appropriately run a pro-level drift program. And of course FD Pro 2 licenses will be up for grabs for the top finishers in the series.

  |   The Drift League Announcement

The Drift League 2018 will consist of four single-day competition events, which will be held at Irwindale Speedway. The series is scheduled to hold its four rounds of competition on Fridays through summer, specifically June 1st, July 20th, August 31st, and September 28th. Rule sets and judging criteria will be based on current Formula DRIFT standards. Each round of competition will include practice time, a qualifying session, and a Top 16 tandem eliminations competition. Course layouts for each round of competition will feature different track configurations from the official FD competition calendar (which, if they’re using layouts from other current oval-based events, would be Orlando Speed World in Fla., Wall Speedway in New Jersey, Evergreen Speedway in Wash., and of course The House of Drift).

TDL competitors will benefit from contingency programs and a cash purse at every competition – details of which are forthcoming at a later date. If you’re a drifter looking to move on up in the completion world, and call Southern California home, might be a good idea to hit up The Drift League – for more information, visit or follow @TheDriftLeague on and .
