Baby Hurricane Mazda FD3S RX-7

RE Amemiya and Mai P&C Garage team up for this authentic homage race car in Thailand

The aggressive, bolt-on overfender look is more popular than ever, we get it — but there's something about the timeless, turn-of-the-century JDM look that still gets us all hot and bothered. That's why we love this FD3S coming at us straight out of Thailand!

Just three years ago, owner Kumpee Thamtarana of Pan Overdrive used the Mazda sports coupe as a simple street car, albeit one dressed up with an RE Amemiya AD-GT kit. But eventually the car was fully handed over to the Overdrive team, led by Mai P&C Garage, who used their deep connections to Japan's high-end aftermarket to transform the FD into the beast you see here.

You see, Pan Overdrive is an official RE Amemiya distributor in Thailand, and they're pretty close to Amemiya-san himself. So the Hurricane kit you see here is not only authentic, it was pulled directly from the Japanese car driven by legends Manabu Orido and Nobuteru Taniguchi. As the build progressed, it became an official collaboration between RE Amemiya and Mai P&C Garage, all of whom affectionately refer to this car as "BABY Hurricane."

As Patrick Swayze famously said, nobody puts baby in a corner — especially when it's packing a turbocharged set of spinning Doritos. The crew at Mai P&C Garage worked their magic on the 13B, giving it a bridge port and balancing job, all while making sure to beef up the apex and corner seals with some Pac Performance parts sourced from Australia.

A forced induction system comprised of parts like a Garrett turbo, HKS wastegate, HKS intercooler, and Greddy Type R blow off valve all help cram more air into the engine. More air needs more fuel, which travels from the 60-liter ATL fuel tank through two Bosch 044 fuel pumps before making a final pass through Denso 850cc injectors. An HKS F-CON V Pro Ver 3.4, tuned here by Mai P&C Garage, helps control it all, giving this FD-chassis RX-7 a power output in excess of 300 hp. An ORC Pro Carbon twin clutch and Mazdaspeed limited-slip differential then help to get those horses to the ground in a controllable manner.

Chassis bits include the good stuff, like HKS HiperMax IV coilovers, massive HKS brakes, and Super Knuckle Low Centers from RE Amemiya. With this FD now built for circuit duty, the inside is sparse, featuring only necessities like a custom rollcage, Bride racing seat, and Defi Super Sport Cluster dash unit.

This RX-7 is damn impressive as it sits now, but it will continue to be developed over the next year in the pursuit of some low lap times. A Quaife gearbox will be added, and the team will continue to develop the aero to produce more downforce. All they need to add, then, is the Aspara Drink livery and this car will be our early-2000s dream come true.
