Seven Dope Mazda RX-7s at SEMA - #SEMA17

Highlighting Mazda's flagship sports car at the tradeshow

Nov 16, 2017

To say pbskids staffers are obsessed with '90s JDM cars isn't only stating the obvious; it's an understatement of mammoth proportions. Diving into the 2017 SEMA Show, we couldn't help but notice there was an unusually large amount of really dope Mazda RX-7s, both FDs and FCs. Whether you're into rotary powered vehicles or the more polarizing non-rotary builds, all of the RX-7s at the show were insanely good. You might recognize a few of them, but here are our favorite RX-7s from SEMA week.

If you're a fan of the Hoonigan brand, you're no doubt familiar with Hert and his FC. Once powered by an LS, Hert's build has come full circle and is now back to being powered by a rotary. The 13B was bridge-ported by Angel Motorsports and gets more kick from a Garrett GT35r turbo. On the outside you'll find the classic BN Sports aero and some wild livery. We found his car sitting pretty at the Eneos booth.

This has to be one of the greatest RX-7 builds to come out of Southern California. You know you've got something special when your car goes to SEMA twice. Jonny's car was featured on the cover of Volume 21, Number 10 and ever since his feature he's added an Aftermarket Industries SP1000 Surge Tank with dual walbro 450 fuel pumps and a new SPEC Twin Plate Carbon clutch. We have no doubt this car will be remembered for generations to come.

This particular FC caught our attention at Wekfest Los Angeles. Long gone is the rotary heart, now powered by a twin turbo LS mated to a Cd009 six-speed transmission. For SEMA, William swapped out his suspension for BC Racing's ZR Series triple adjustable external reservoir coilovers. He's also changed his wheel setup to BC Forged LE52 wheels wrapped in Toyo's R888R tires.

JDM aficionados will immediately recognize the Fujita Engineering Evolutional Development aero, also known as FEED. If you haven't read his feature, this kit was the 12th ever to be purchased from FEED. And if that doesn't tickle your fancy, the Scoot four-rotor engine will surely get your attention. New parts for SEMA include a Motec C127 display, button keypad, mil-spec wiring harness by Sakata Motorsport Electronics and a Zeitronix Zt-2 air/fuel ratio meter with digital display.

Aaron's FD is another car that has graced the pages of pbskids. Since then it has gone through major updates including a color change, new livery and new turbo setup - now relying on a Borg Warner 8371 1.05 with a Glassman bullets series 321 stainless turbo manifold. An Adaptronic M2000 standalone ECU makes everything work together including those six IDX17000s injectors. Aaron tells us that he's proud of the turbo setup and noted that worked on the turbine housing himself.

  |   Rx7s At SEMA 2017 Kyle Mohan FD3S

Meet the first RX-7 in the U.S. with a BN Sports' BLS kit.. Formula DRIFT driver Kyle Mohan's goal was to go as wild as he could without cutting up the car, still maintaining the OEM block and the original interior feel, but also go to the track and shred. A few highlights of the build include the WP Pro big brake kit, Autometer digital LCD display, Haltech Elite 1500 ECU and the 13b half-bridgeport motor built by Kyle himself. He tells us it may end up being his next Formula D car. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

This RX-7 was so good it won our pbskids Best of Show Award by Meguiars. Some of the obvious, rad modifications include the turbocharged 408 LQ9 motor, which if you don't know LS talk is a 6.0L out of a truck/Escalade. It's also worth mentioning the Technocraft carbon fiber seats, Rocket Bunny aero, and the huge 345 Mickey Thompson tires. We did notice a slight clearance issue with the piping and accessory belt, but now that the mad dash for SEMA is finally over, Gooichi Motors will have more time to get this beast running right and ready for the streets!
