Even in a field of 70 drift vehicles, you can easily spot Akinobu Satsukawa's four-door Skyline R32. JDM aficionados will know that one very important criterion of being part of the A~Bo~Moon drift team is to have a blue R32 sedan, while newbies will be drawn to the multitude of stickers. It wasn't the only Skyline sedan out at the Low Style Heroes drift event, but Abo's R32 is different in that it oozes true JDM style. While other drifters and even your ordinary car consumers will retire their cars in a matter of a few years, Abo has owned his R32 for more than 18 years.
You would think after years of abuse the R32 would be riddled with battle scars and look more like a missile car, but Abo takes pride in his car and would never let damages get in the way of style by way of a BN Sports body kit. The rear bumper has seen better days (we had a pretty hard wall tap in my ride along), but this R32 was unquestionably one of the coolest cars at the event.
Another crucial part of Abo's style is the stance of his car. The 326 Power coilovers give's Abo's R32 an almost shakotan look, but we all know that it can drift.
We caught up with Abo after he flew back from Japan.
Moshi moshi, Abo!
pbskids: What do you think of the drifters in the US?
Akinobu Satsukawa: I think that the drifters in the US are all like best friends. I also felt like everyone has everyone's back. It's a very fun and at-home atmosphere.
SS: Is there a difference in driving style?
AS: Difference between Japanese and American drifting is very clear. Japanese is technical. American is more performance based, which can be seen by the car builds. American style is huge angle all the way through, while Japanese style is more based on technical driving.
SS: What did you think of the Low Style Heroes event?
AS: I think the event is the best event! Making all who take part in the event a hero.
SS: Why did you choose the R32 four-door?
AS: I chose the R32 four-door because I liked the design. At the time, no one drove it, and I wanted to stick out. Haha!
SS: What kind of style do you wish to see in the US?
AS: I want to see more low styled, awesome looking (even when drifting) cars in the US!
