Autocon SF '16 Spotlight - '49 Ford F1 Farm Truck

The car no one expected to see at Autocon SF

Aug 18, 2016

Being different doesn't always have to have a negative connotation attached to it. Sometimes different can really set something apart. At Autocon's LA To The Bay event, we found the most peculiar build at the Toyo Tires booth in Scott Birdsall's '49 Ford F1 farm truck. Sure, it isn't your run-of-the-mill JDM or sport compact car we normally talk about, but this was easily the talk of the show.

The truck was built by race shop Chuckles Garage and was given the name Old Smokey, probably for its ability to do massive burnouts and roll coal with its 1,200hp engine. The motor is a 5.9l Cummins common rail diesel with Industrial Injection 91mm and 66mm compound twin turbos. The inner workings include Carillo rods, Mahle pistons and Hamilton cams. The beast engine is mated to a four-speed sequentially shifted 47RH transmission using Suncoast components.

In the bed of the truck you'll see the Nitrous Express Water methanol injection system, Mishimoto radiator and all of the intricate suspension geometry. From afar, the car looks like a rusted bucket of metal, but what you're actually seeing is an inconspicuous brush painted patina to hide a purpose built tube frame. The interior is, for lack of a better description, manly. It has a full roll cage with custom aluminum sheet metal panels. The Kirkey racing seats and magnesium dash insert will make you want to grow a beard and look for a fistfight.

Scott tells us that Old Smokey was designed to appeal to every type of hot rod and motorsport enthusiast. The autocross enthusiast will love the tube chassis and modern racing suspension. The hot road enthusiast will admire the trucks old patina body and engine power. The turbocharged Cummins engine will no doubt attract legions of diesel fans. Drag racers can't help but respect a truck capable of 9-second quarter mile blasts. And last but not least, land-speed racers will appreciate its 200mph capability.
