Tokyo Auto Salon 2018 Part 3

We hit more halls to bring you the very best of TAS ’18!

My Tokyo trip continued as I rolled into day two of the Tokyo Auto Salon. Even after having spent the previous day trotting through the massive event, there were plenty of cars and booths that I missed the first time around. For comparison’s sake, TAS is about half the size of the SEMA Show but with the same amount of people. And if you’ve never been, SEMA is literally shoulder to shoulder by mid-week, and if you’ve somewhere to be at the show at a specific time, you’d better plan accordingly because the foot traffic is insane. Now extrapolate that by tightening the confines of the venue and you start to see just how tough it is to move through TAS. The Japanese are much more respectful of allowing you to get that shot in before walking in front of your lens, which makes covering the event far less irritating. That cultural aspect is one of many reasons so many people love to visit Japan.

Anyway, onto the pics of the day – below you’ll find some of my top picks from my second tour of the big show.

  |   Liberty Walk Lc500
  |   Lb Works Nsx Rear

Stopping by the Liberty Walk booth, we checked out their new NSX and LC 500 aero. Wataru Kato and crew knocked it out of the park by enhancing both rides with their signature wide-body look. While the LC 500 features their classic over-fender upgrade, the NSX kit comes with new front and rear fenders that provide a more seamless look.

  |   Toyota Gr Concept

The near 1,000hp, Toyota GR Super Sport LMP1-style concept really drew a crowd. Behind the completed vehicle was their twin-turbo 2.4-liter V6 with hybrid assist that’s mated to its carbon fiber chassis. Developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing, this is actually designed to be a street car! It’s about time someone followed in the CLK GTR’s footsteps and built a proper road legal, road race-inspired car.

  |   Garage Active Gtr

Garage Active’s all carbon fiber GT-R was finished less than 24 hours before TAS. Developed by long-time GT-R tuner Kazushige Sakamoto, the body maintains the same lines as a factory R32 but with 40mm wider front and rear fenders. They have even talked about developing a tube frame chassis to mate the carbon body to. Stay tuned for an expanded mini-feature on this car.

  |   Sabulive Gtr Front
  |   Sabulive R35 Dash Display

One of the few drag cars at TAS was Sabulive’s ultra clean R35 GT-R. This 1,500-plus hp VQ37 build has run a best of 8.518 at 167 mph! Inside, the factory cluster has been removed for a full LCD panel.

  |   Mazda 767 Front
  |   Maza 767 Rear

If there was one car we wanted to see doing demos out in the parking lot it would have to be this ultra-sexy Mazda 767 and its 4 rotors of glory.

  |   Rocky Auto Z Skyline

Every enthusiasts dream car garage – Rocky Auto’s Toyota 2000GT paired up with a first gen. Skyline GT-R.

  |   Nissan S15 Rocket Bunny Front
  |   Rocket Bunny S15 Rear

My all-time favorite JDM car is Nissan’s S15. Hard to find at the Tokyo Auto Salon, this was a perfect poster child for the 6666 Customs/Rocket Bunny livery. Only 6 more years until we can start to import them into the U.S.!

The Euros at TE Puerto Rico were predominantly VW. Talking to the locals we learned there's a strong presence of both air-cooled and water-cooled Dubs, making the Volkswagen scene in Puerto Rico quite healthy.

The recipe for Modest is simple; a strict screening process, limited number of entries, and a cool atmosphere. All of which they nailed and topped off with the perfect venue right in the heart of St. Paul.
