VTEC Club x Honda Meet

There’s the bad kind of selling out – as in, undermining your principles for personal gain – and then there’s the good kind of selling out – as in, coming up with an idea so hot, it meets or exceeds expectation. The recent Honda Meet x VTEC Club track weekend at GingerMan Raceway near South Haven, Mich., was a sell out of the positive variety, bringing together two Honda communities separated by a big chunk of North America for three days of hot laps and good times.

Origins of the event can be traced to 2015, when time attack enthusiast Mikey Singhaseni put Chris Stewart and Adam Jabaay, Honda Meet founders and operators, in touch with Duane Bada from VTEC Club, a Southern California-based time attack series (we’ve covered all five of its events so far in 2016 – Rd. 1, Rd. 2, Rd. 3, Rd. 4, and Rd. 5), to discuss the likelihood of a joint track day. One thing led to another, and VTEC Club x Honda Meet was born, with tickets completely selling out within a day of the event’s announcement. Bada tells us, “Bringing the two together was a no-brainer.”

From Friday, July 15, to Sunday, July 17, Honda and Acura galore took to GingerMan’s 2.21-mile, 11-turn road course, with drivers of all skill levels on tap. Among them was William Au-Yeung, whose name might ring a bell among fans of time attack (he’s run various Global Time Attack events, including its season ender with our Super Lap Battle). Au-Yeung, who hails from Ontario, Canada, set a new FWD track record at Honda Meet x VTEC Club, lapping in 1:31.121 in the PZTuning Civic SiR.

Like we suggested at the top, this sell out has promise written all over it, exceeding many people's expectations. In fact, Bada says VTEC Club plans to do more of these events with Honda Meet – and other organizations like it – in the future. He adds, “It showed us the potential [of this type of event] and other opportunities that we can bring for others outside SoCal.”
