We can throw you every corny "race against time" metaphor for time attack you can possibly handle, but unless you really appreciate the art of making a car defy physics and, in turn, go against many of the things the factory intended, you will never see the beauty of the motorsport. Time Attack is a completely different beast when it comes to competitive racing, where every area of your car, including the engine, suspension, tires and aero need to work in harmony with its driver.
It was '04 when Super Lap Battle was established, and for the past few years has been held in conjunction with the Global Time Attack season finale. As you walk the pits of Buttonwillow Raceway during SLB, you'll notice that - maybe due to their seemingly overdone aero, or maybe because function comes before anything else in racing - many of the cars aren't that great looking (It's true! Don't get butt-hurt). However, this year we were shocked to find a handful of fast and equally beautiful cars-the kind that could look good on a car show venue floor and also dominate on the track.
KEN XU'S MAZDA RX-7
It's always a treat when you can hear a rotary being driven hard and equally cool seeing it shoot flames around Buttonwillow. Alongside LMR Development, Ken Xu was able to pilot his FD to a 1:52.395. He dominated the Street RWD class and took home 1st place.
POWER NEEDY MOTORSPORTS ACURA NSX
We were excited to meet the family racing team at Power Needy Motorsports. They have two extremely cool Hondas, but our favorite is their twin turbo NSX that competed in Limited RWD class. The dad of the family, Kevin Panter, clocked in a 1:59.123 with this classic '90s JDM superhero. He tells us on high boost this NSX can push up to 600hp and is also driven on the street.
DAVID HAAGSMA'S NISSAN GT-R
One of the most aggressive looking cars on the track was this Nissan GT-R built by SP Engineering and driven by David Haagsma. This monster is packing 800hp and hit a time of 1:43.176 in Unlimited AWD. Notable parts include the APR Aero, RPS carbon brakes and JRZ suspension.
SPOON SPORTS USA HONDA CIVIC TYPE R
Seeing the all-new Honda Civic Type R on the track is nothing short of amazing. It gets even better when you add Spoon Sports and pro hot-shoe Dai Yoshihara behind the wheel. In the Limited FWD class, Dai Yoshihara clocked an impressive 1:58.361.
SON VO'S HONDA S2000
Son Vo drove one of the best-looking S2000s on the field. His AP1 has an F22 swap and with only a few basic bolt-ons was able to set a time of 1.58:286. His fastest time landed him in 4th place in the Street RWD class. Son gained experience and knowledge at Evasive Motorsports before returning back to his home in the Bay Area.
