AutoCon at Formula D Irwindale 2017

Show series curates some of its best to pro drifting showdown for a second time this year

Not far from where 1,000hp drift machines were making clouds and an Irishman was putting on a clinic in how to win a title, AutoCon set up shop on a patch of Irwindale Speedway paddock asphalt, carrying on in the car-show tradition at the season finale of previous stagers like Offset Kings and others. If the pro drifting championship represents part of the motorsports side of tuner culture, AutoCon reps the upper echelon of the show scene. And the few dozen examples they brought with them did not disappoint.

Most of the cars were familiar but others we're surprised we overlooked before - like the Cefiro from Idaho to go along with the Leopard-converted M30 we've seen around locally (the JDM Nissan is strong in these guys). We got all lightheaded perusing the still D-series (but now turbo), super clean sixth-gen. Civic coupe on TE37s, but what really stopped us cold was the impossibly immaculate deep red FD3S RX-7 on Enkei RPF1s - lord, have mercy.

AutoCon's footprint at Irwindale wasn't huge, but what it lacked in quantity it more than made up for in quality. For those keeping score, this is the second time this year FD and AC have teamed up (AutoCon also showed at Round 1: Long Beach), and we expect to see the two organizations do still more collabs in the months ahead. Dig into the photo gallery to see the show inside the show at Formula D Irwindale 2017.
