Only a few weeks ago (September 29th) we brought you our coverage of the at the world famous Petersen Automotive Museum. Now we move to another part of Europe where you find famous marques such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volkswagen and more.
This past Saturday, October 12th, the Petersen once again opened its doors to car nuts from all over Southern California to enjoy Bratwurst and beer as well as free access to the museum for those who entered a car. Below you will find a handful of our favorites (chosen by your author), with a heavy dose of Porsche. Let us know in the comments section below which of these German beauties is your favorite.
1970 Porsche 911T
One thing led to another and now I've owned it since 2002.
This car was absolutely stunning and immediately grabbed our attention. Although it may look like an authentic , this is actually a tribute car. The owner is the restorer of the car, originally owned by a customer who had been taking the car to his shop since 1983. In 2002 the then current owner (a woman in her late 80's and the original owner) brought the car in as the result of her first accident, which she was the victim of. The insurance company was not willing to fix, so that's when the current owner jumped in. "One thing led to another and now I've owned it since 2002," the owner said. About a year and a half ago he had built a 2.5L twin plug motor for the car, which makes it a little faster than your typical S spec '70 T. More power is never a bad thing.
1973 BMW 2002 Tii
It's a great car for going out in the canyons and chasing motorcycles.
Surprisingly, this was one of only a few s at the show, but boy was it something special. The owner started a ground up restoration in 2008 and just finished this year in June. "Like any ground up restoration, it went further than was originally intended. It came out just the way I wanted. It's the sixth one I've built since high school," the owner said. Although he doesn't race it, the engine is one of the best parts of the car. Making this even more special is the 'Tii' attached to the name, which means fuel injected (these models are more rare than your typical 2002). It has a 2.0L engine with a seven quart racing capacity oil pan, longer rods (144mm- 5.6in compared to 135mm- 5.3in), aluminum JE pistons and more. "It's a great car for going out in the canyons and chasing motorcycles." A total wreck when he first got it, the owner has put some serious TLC into his 2002. The Electric Blue paint is fitting for this little rocket, making 197hp and 180 lb-ft of torque all while weighing less than 2000 lb.
1970 Porsche 914-6
Being the only 914 built with a full set of matching numbers, the owner is fully aware of its value.
When you think of a rare car, probably 'one of ten' comes to mind, or 'the only surviving example.' What about the first production example ever made? This is the first one to be shown in the US in October of 1969 at the Boston Car Show. It was also used to introduce the Porsche Audi dealership chain in 1969. Part prototype and part production car, this 914-6 is Euro-spec. Unfortunately, when Porsche was done showing the car, they couldn't sell it for street use so it was sold with the intention of racing. Equipped with a 914-6 driveline, 914-6 GT front suspension and brake system, full racing 914-6 GT 2.0L racing twin plug engine, and a racing transmission with limited-slip differential. Number 0011, this car was used as an example for the production team as to how many people would be required to produce it and how they would need to assemble the car. Being the only 914 built with a full set of matching numbers, the owner is fully aware of its value.
1957 Oval Window Volkswagen Beetle
My friends ask me why I bring all that stuff with me to the show, then they see me winning and understand.
In a sea of Porsche's we found this pretty little bug in perfect condition. The owner has had the car for six years now, but it was in pretty bad shape when he found it. It had navy blue paint, which was incorrect, so the current owner researched and repainted to the correct Horizon Blue. The interior was redone, the engine powder coated, skirts (not stock), different tailpipes and steering wheel were added along with a radio that actually works. Although it looks comfortable to drive every day, this is a show car, while his '66 Square Back is used as a daily driver. "As a kid I had a love for VW. My neighbors had them but my parents didn't. I used to be in this day care club and I would be picked up in a VW Bus. I remember the smell of the gas, and the sound of it." When the owner shows his , he usually comes prepared with a tiki themed display. "My friends ask me why I bring all that stuff with me to the show, then they see me winning and understand."
2006 Porsche Carrera S
I've had this for about seven years and I'll probably keep it till the day I die.
In a subtle grey, this was the first to stick out at the German Show. The owner has had the car since new, purchasing it in Florida before moving to California. Although the car is fairly stock, the ECU has been remapped and visually looks very well taken care of. "I've had this for about seven years and I'll probably keep it till the day I die," the owner commented. Having always been a car nut, he has taken part in SCC amateur road racing in race-spec Miatas at various tracks such as Daytona and Sebring. "It helps calm me down on the highway, because I get it all out on the track." Waiting most of his life to finally be able to own his first Porsche, the owner has always been a German car fan with his first car being a VW.
